You don’t want somebody who handles DUIs every now and then. There’s a big technical aspect to DUIs that’s lacking in many of other criminal cases. There are things that need to be done and looked at in a DUI case that are unique. In December of 2016, I went to Atlanta to become trained on the standard field sobriety tests (SFSTs). I’m now a SFST practitioner. I received the same training that police officers receive, but the course was tailored to helping criminal defense attorneys better represent their DUI clients. There is a certain way to administer the SFSTs. Many officers are not proficient in the administration of those tests, so it is crucial to have an attorney who is able to spot the errors. It is very powerful to a jury when the defense attorney knows more about SFSTs than the officer and can highlight the officer’s lack of knowledge in front of a jury.
